Evaluating Microcredentials: A Framework for Quality and Dependability

After my exploration of existing microcredential frameworks, in addition to my completion of a few competency-based learning courses over the past few weeks, I have drafted a form (Figure 1) for evaluating the quality and dependability of microcredentials.

I have divided the criteria among five categories which I believe to be essential:

  • Curriculum
  • Course Organization
  • Learner Products
  • Ethics, and
  • Records

I will evaluate these five major categories of each microcredential that I have completed so far, in addition to any others that I complete in the next couple of weeks, using the 20 criteria listed in the framework. I expect to revise along the way as I continue to grapple with the idea of what makes microcredentials valuable in the global career market.
